“Spirited Away” is an irreplaceable work for me.
『千と千尋～』は、私にとってかけがえのない作品です。
The first performance moved me through all sorts of emotions, and I went through rehearsals and touring performances feeling truly blessed to have been able to spend such fulfilling times in my acting career.
いろんな感情が揺さぶられ、役者人生でこんなに充実した時間を過ごせるのは本当に幸せなことだと感じながらお稽古、ツアー公演をまわった初演でした。
I am very happy to be able to play the precious role of Chihiro at Misonoza last year, and also in London this year, starting with the Imperial Theatre.
大切な千尋という役を、昨年の御園座に続いて、今年は帝劇から始まりロンドンでも演じられることを嬉しく思っています。
Also, new cast members are joining the role of Chihiro, which I have played with Mone-chan, and I hope that I will be able to show Chihiro that has evolved as a result of the freshness and learning that I have gained.
また、萌音ちゃんと務めてきた千尋役に新しいキャストも加わり、新鮮さと学びを得て、私自身も進化した千尋をお見せできるのではと思っています。
In the rehearsal hall, John’s direction changes every day, and I’m surprised at how much it has changed since the first performance, in a good way (lol).
稽古場では、初演からこんなに変わるんだとビックリするくらい、ジョンの演出が毎日変化しています、いい意味でね(笑)。
I am happy to be witnessing the moment when my work continues to evolve.
作品がどんどん進化し続ける瞬間に立ち会えていることを幸せに思います。
I am happy to be witnessing the moment when my work continues to evolve. Personally, I turned 25 this year, and I was surprised to find that I didn’t become distant as I got older, but that I was able to better understand and relate to 10-year-old Chihiro’s feelings while practicing.
私自身は、今年25歳になったのですが、年を重ねることで遠ざかるのではなく、稽古をしていて10歳の千尋の気持ちがより理解できたり、寄り添えたりすることに自分でも驚いています。
I want everyone in Japan, everyone in London, and everyone around the world to see the powered-up version of “Spirited Away” as soon as possible!
日本のみなさん、そしてロンドンのみなさん、世界のみなさんにパワーアップした『千と千尋～』を早くご覧いただきたい！
No matter how much expectations you have, I think this is a work that will not disappoint.
どれだけ期待をしていただいても、それを裏切らない作品になっていると思います。
The premiere was my first time on stage, so I really didn’t know what was right and what was left.
初演は初舞台でしたので、本当に右も左もわからない状態でした。
I am confident that I was able to form a relationship with Chihiro that will never fade and memories that will never fade even after decades of my acting career.
役者人生の中で絶対に何十年経っても色あせることのない記憶、忘れることはできない関係性に千尋となれたんじゃないかな。
I think it’s a great honor to be part of the original cast and to be part of the opening of London.
オリジナルキャストとしてロンドンの幕開けを担うことは、大変光栄なことだと思っております。
Since it’s Ghibli’s masterpiece “Spirited Away”, I’m sure people will enjoy it even if they don’t understand the language, so I’m not worried about that.
ジブリの名作『千と千尋』ですので、言葉が通じなくとも、楽しんでいただけるとそこに心配はしていません。どうなるのか私自身も楽しみにしています！

I am very happy to be able to work on my favorite work again this year and be a member of such a wonderful company.
今年も大好きな作品に携われること、素敵なカンパニーの一員になれることがとても幸せです。
Now that I’m here, seeing so many journalists and hearing the big words of Mr. Matsuoka and Mr. Ian, I feel like I’m going to jump in joy (lol).
今、ここにいて、報道の方の多さと、松岡さんやイアンさんのスケールの大きな言葉に、ちょっとふわふわしてしまいそうな気持ちですが(笑)。
I believe in a great story at any theater, and I would like to play Chihiro simply and with care, devoting myself to conveying that story.
どの劇場でも素晴らしいストーリーを信じ、それを伝えることに徹して素朴に大切に千尋を演じたいと思っております。
In the rehearsal hall, five members are creating Chihiro, including the four people here and Marina Mori from Understudy.
稽古場ではここにいる4人に加えてアンダースタディの森莉那ちゃんと５人で千尋を作っています。
The cast has doubled, and with the addition of the reliable Swing, I feel that the world of “Spirited Away” is becoming even richer and freer every day.
キャストも２倍に増え、頼もしいスウィングさんも加わり、より一層『千と千尋の神隠し』の世界が豊かに自由になっているのを、日々、肌で感じています。
There are only a few days left until the opening day, but I will do my best to face the role and the work so that I can live my life as Chihiro with a fresh mind, softness, and sincerity every day.
私も毎日新鮮な気持ちで、柔らかく、そして誠実に、千尋として生きられるように初日まであと少しですが、役と、作品と向き合って頑張ります。
It’s a really important work for me, and even though I’m doing other things, Chihiro will always be in my heart.
私にとっても本当に大切な作品ですし、千尋は他のことをしていてもずっと心の中にいます。
When I see children around ten years old on the street, I start following them with my eyes.
街で10歳ぐらいの子を見かけると目で追ってしまうんです。
How to stand, how to run, how to talk.
どうやって立つのか、走るのか、しゃべるのか。
Even when I’m not rehearsing, I find myself doing research for Chihiro.
稽古中でなくても千尋のための研究をしている自分がいます。
I feel like I’ve always had Chihiro in my heart.
私はずっと心の中に千尋を飼っているんだなと感じます。
She is my dear one, like my friend, or my child.
友達のような子どものような愛しい存在です。
I also couldn’t quite imagine the London performance. The rotation was also announced. I play Chihiro a lot of times. Therefore, I believe that the first thing to do in life is to put health first.
ロンドン公演は私も全く想像が追いついてなくて。ローテーションも発表されましたが千尋を演じる回数がとても多いので、まずはなによりも健康第一だなと思っています。
In the rehearsal hall, John doesn’t say, “Let’s do it this way in London,” or “Let’s express it this way because it’s not Japanese,” and he doesn’t create anything for London.
稽古場で、ジョンは「ロンドンではこういう風にしよう」とか「日本語じゃないからこういう表現をしよう」というようなロンドン用を作ってはいません。
As a Japanese person, I want to face things head-on with a Japanese heart.
日本人として、日本人の心を持って真っ直ぐ向き合いたいと思っています。
Things might change a lot when I go to London (lol).
ロンドンへ行ったらいっぱい変わるかもしれませんが(笑)。

I saw Mone-chan’s Chihiro at the Imperial Theatre when it first premiered.
私は初演時に、帝国劇場で萌音ちゃんの千尋を見ました。
I still remember the goosebumps I got the moment the show started. I thought, “There is a real Chihiro”.
幕が開いた瞬間に「本物の千尋がいる」と鳥肌が立ったのを今でも覚えています。
I never thought I would be able to participate in that work, so I’m still incredibly happy to be standing here.
その作品に自分が参加できるとは思ってもいなかったので、こうしてここに立っていることが今でも信じられないくらいうれしいです。
I would like to thank everyone at the company for welcoming the new cast members so warmly and kindly. I want to practice hard and play Chihiro to the best of my ability.
新しいキャストたちを温かく、優しく迎えてくださるカンパニーのみなさんに感謝をしながら、稽古を頑張って精一杯千尋を務めたいと思います。
I was very nervous about playing Chihiro physically.
千尋の体力面も含め不安が大きかったのですが。
Mone-chan actually does things that I don’t understand in the rehearsal hall and shows them to me with her back.
稽古場で私がわからないところを実際にやって、背中で見せてくれるのが萌音ちゃん。
Kanna-chan cheerfully encourages us by saying, “You can do it!”, “You are okay!”, and “Just do it!”.
環奈ちゃんは「できるよできるよ！」「大丈夫っしょ！」「いけるっしょ！」と明るく励ましてくれます。
These two have really helped me, Momo-chan, and Marina-chan from Understudy.
この二人に、私も桃ちゃんもアンダーの莉那ちゃんも本当に助けられています。

I am currently rehearsing, but I still feel strange that I am participating in the role of Chihiro.
今、絶賛稽古中ですが、自分が千尋役で参加していることが今でも不思議です。
At the rehearsal hall, I had the best seat (lol) and was able to watch Chihiro live and learn a lot.
稽古場では、一番いい席で(笑)生の千尋を見てたくさん学ばせていただいています。
I can’t help but enjoy the experience of being moved by my body as I feel the smells and sounds of all kinds of cute puppets, from large creatures to small creatures.
また、大きな生き物から小さな生き物まで、いろんな可愛いパペットの生き物たちの匂いや発する音を感じ、自分の身体が感動している、その体験がとても楽しくて仕方がないです。
And now that I’m standing here at the press conference with my colleagues who are always practicing hard together, I’m even more excited to be able to present this work to everyone.
そしていつも一緒に稽古を頑張っているみなさんとこうして今、会見の場に立っていることで、みんなでこの作品をお届けできることがますます楽しみになっています。
I’ve learned a lot from the words and attitudes of these two actors who have played the role of Chihiro.
千尋役経験者のお二人の言葉や姿勢からたくさんのことを教えていただいています。
In addition, John’s words, “I understand how you feel anxious, but there’s no need to worry. Next time you come to the rehearsal hall, please bring your energy.” have really stuck with me.
加えてジョンの「不安になる気持ちもわかるけれど心配しなくていい。次に稽古場に来るときはみんなエネルギーを持ってきてください」という言葉がすごく私の心に残っています。
I think that energy is similar to the “life force” that humans breathe into the creatures represented by puppets.
そのエネルギーというのはパペットで表現される生き物に人が命を吹きこむ“生命力”に近いのかなと思っています。
Every day I am moved by the feeling of seeing things that were previously invisible.
それによって見えなかったものが見えてくるような感動が毎日あります。
As Chihiro, I also want to live a proper life and be able to talk to the creatures that live there.
私も千尋としてちゃんと生きて、そこにいる生き物たちと会話できるようになりたいと思います。

This is my third time acting since the first time, and last year, but personally, the last time I acted in a movie was about twenty years ago, so I have been playing the same role for over twenty years.
初演、そして昨年、今回で3度目ですが、私個人的には映画をやらせていただいたのは20年ぐらい前ですので20数年も1つの役をやらせていただいていることになります。
This is something that makes me very happy, and something that I feel I really need to work hard at.
それはとても幸せなことであり、本当に頑張らなければいけないなと思っているところでもあります。
Even though my juniors told me that it’s time to hand over Yubaba to my juniors, I personally love both Yubaba and Zeniba, so I’d like to play with them a little more.
そろそろ湯婆婆は後輩に譲ってくださいと言われても、私的には湯婆婆も銭婆も愛おしいので、もうちょっとだけやらせていただきたいなと思っております。
The number of employees has also increased.
従業員も増えました。
I’ll do my best to work hard, so thank you again for your continued support.
しっかり働きますので、どうぞ今回もよろしくお願いいたします。
The voice actors’ expressions were completed by the time the movie was released.
声優としての表現は映画公開時に出来上がっています。
Twenty years later, when I say the same lines using this body, the expressions are completely different.
そこから20年後に、この身体を使って同じ台詞を言ってみると全然違う表現になるんですね。
As a play, my body has to be established as Yubaba and Zeniba, but on the other hand, there are probably many people who are watching the movie.
演劇として私の身体が湯婆婆・銭婆として成立しないといけない、一方で映画を見てくださっている方もいるだろう。
Going back and forth there was a double whammy, to say it without fear of misunderstanding.
そこを行ったり来たり、誤解を恐れずに言えば二重苦でした。
But in the rehearsal hall, John said, “Please don’t imitate anyone.”
でもジョンが稽古場で「みなさん決してモノマネはしないでください」とおっしゃったんです。
Then I felt like it made sense to me, and I had no hesitation in acting using my hands and feet.
それでストンと落ちたような気がして、自分の手足を使った演劇の方向への迷いがなくなりました。

Two years ago, I met John Caird in London and we talked about this work.
２年前、ジョン・ケアードさんにロンドンでお会いして、その時にこの作品の話をしていただきました。
I immediately flew to Sapporo to see the work and thought, “I absolutely have to bring this to London”.
すぐに札幌に飛んで作品を拝見して、「これは絶対にロンドンに持ってこなければいけない」と思いました。
I kept the London Coliseum, the largest theatre in London’s West End, and it has already sold more than any record in London.
ロンドンのウエストエンドでも１番大きい劇場、ロンドンコロシアムを押さえまして、すでにこれまでのロンドンで記録にないほどのセールスになっています。
There have been a lot of rumors about this production among Londoners and people involved in London theatres, and everyone is looking forward to it.
この作品についてはロンドンっ子のみなさん、そしてロンドンの劇場関係者でも非常に噂が流れて大変皆さん楽しみにされています。
I think this anime movie is loved in the first place and that there are many Ghibli fans all over the world.
そもそもこのアニメ映画が愛されて、世界中にジブリファンがたくさんいるということだと思います。
We communicated to our fans on SNS.
ファンの皆様に向かって、我々はSNSで発信していきました。
So I think the fans who bought tickets this time are generally between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five.
ですので今回チケットを購入してくださったファンの方々というのは、だいたい18歳から35歳ぐらいの年齢の方だと思います。
What I find truly rare and wonderful when working with Japanese actors is that they all take their work seriously and pour their energy into delivering it to the audience.
日本の役者の皆さんとお仕事をしていて、本当に稀有で素晴らしいなと思うのが、皆さん真摯に向き合って、エネルギーを注いでお客さんに渡してくださるんですね。
I’m sure this will resonate with our audience in London, and I think they’ll love this piece.
ロンドンのお客様にも絶対に伝わると思いますし、この作品を大好きになってくれると思います。

Rather than saying I’ve made my decision, they told me, “It’s been decided. Thank you for your support.”

I think it was a wonderful project that I couldn’t refuse.
私が断る余地もない素晴らしいプロジェクトだったと思います。
However, I honestly never imagined that tickets would sell this well.
ただ、ここまでチケットが売れるとは正直想像していませんでした。
We have also decided to extend it longer than originally planned.
当初の予定よりも延長もすることになりました。
I’m surprised that the Ghibli brand and the power of its works are truly relevant overseas.
ジブリのブランド、作品の威力は海外でも本当に通用するんだなと驚いています。
Thankfully, we have received many inquiries from producers in other countries, so Mr John Caird, Ms Imai, and our team are thinking about what we should do next and how we will proceed.

Ghibli has many potential fans all over the world.
全世界において、ジブリには潜在的なファンがいっぱいいる。
They don’t necessarily go to movie theatres or play theatres, but there are really passionate Ghibli fans, and I think they’re very young.
必ずしも映画館や劇場に行く人ではないけど、本当に熱狂的なジブリのファンがいて、とても若い人だと思うんです。
In both America and Britain, theatre fans aren’t necessarily young people.
アメリカでもイギリスでも、演劇のファンは必ずしも若い人ではありません。
Miyazaki’s fans are in twenties, and some are even younger.
宮崎さんのファンは20代だったり、もっと若い人たちもいる。
I think fans of this kind of new kind of theater will come to see it. I’m looking forward to it.
そういう新たな演劇のファンに観に来てもらえるんじゃないか。それを楽しみにしています。
I think the most important thing in directing is how clearly the story is conveyed.
演出で１番大切だと思ってるのは、ストーリーをいかに明確に伝えるかということ。
It’s a bit strange and unusual for anime.
アニメとしては普通じゃない、ちょっと不思議な感覚。
For example, I think that in the Disney tradition, there are good people and bad people, and there is a formula of stories where young people grow up.
例えばディズニーの伝統だといい人と悪い人がいて、若い人が成長していく物語というフォーミュラがあると思うんですけど。
What is important in conveying Miyazaki’s work to the audience is that there is no division between good people and bad people, but that everyone has good and bad sides.
宮崎さんの作品を観客に伝えるのに重要なのは、いい人と悪い人に分かれているわけではなく、誰もがいい面を持っていて悪い面を持っている。
Even the heroine is like that, and so is the hero.
ヒロインでさえもそう、ヒーローもそう。
Miyazaki’s world is complex and full of nuance.
宮崎さんの世界は複雑でニュアンスに満ちている。
I think it reflects that the human world is complex and full of nuances.
それは人間の世界が複雑でニュアンスに満ちていることの反映だと思う。
I want the audience to understand that this is the most important thing.
観客の皆さんにもそれが１番重要なことなんだとわかっていただきたい。
At the end, Kamaji says, “It’s love, love,” and I think that’s the end of the story.
釜爺が最後に「愛だよ、愛」と言いますけどそこに尽きると思います。
